Finished Another Book!

How to Read the Bible, by James L. Kugel - This book forced reroutes of the synapses of my brain like none ever before. It is an 800 page cinder block that I was happy to carry around with me for precisely that reason. For 34 years I looked at the Bible one way, and from now until my last day, I'll be looking at it another way. NOT recommended for staunch believers in the 8th ikkar. You have been warned.

Man, you read an awful lot. Reading is like the Eitz Hadaas. I read that book, twice.

I do read a lot. I love it. But ya know, I've never read a book twice. There's too many other books to read!

I've read several books twice for various reasons. This one because the first time I read it voraciously. The seoond time I savored the experience. I actually once read an Agatha Christie book twice 'without realizing it' (many many years apart though) until the (brilliant) break-thru ending.

You can't talk about a good book without giving me the title so I can read it! Fess up!

The only books I'd consider reading again are "Word Freak" and "How to Win Friends and Influence People."

There was "Before the Dawn" by Nicholas Wade. I only got halfway thru the second time, I found it a bit repetitive. And then I absolutely loved "A world lit only by fire", by William Manchester, read it twice and loved it both times.

And then there's the book that I actually read three times. "Return to Soddom and Gemorra". Crazy, no?

The first time, I was all confused. The second time caused my personal epiphany. The third time was ten years later. For me it was a life-altering book. I wouldn;t really recommend it but you already read Kugel, so you're probably OK with it. So how is it that you use your real name in a blog in public and admit to reading something like Kugel? What kind of shul do you daven in?

3x is a serious achievement, but for me, there are so many books I need to read that even 2x of my favorites is just not in order. I am currently reading more than a dozen books simultaneously, have 28 on my NYPL "to read" list, plus 3 on hold and 21 on my Amazon wish list. When will I ever have the time to read anything twice?

To successfully answer your last question, I will PARAphrase Groucho Marx: "I wouldn’t want to belong to any club that wouldn't have me as a member."

You could be

A) Retired
B) Inherited big time money
C) Unemployed
C) Your wife is wealthy.
D) Working for the NYT book review section.
E) A Lotto Winner

I'm sure there are a few other possibilities that would leave you with all the time in the world to read....

PS. I don't think most bloggers get spam without word ver.

None of the above. Like the gadol hador, Dean Karnazes, I have resigned to forgo sleep to accomplish the daily things I want, especially the leisure things that get in the way of family life. I fall asleep reading and read when I wake up. I arise up at 4:30 AM to do my runs.

I too sometimes arise at 4:30 AM for a run, but I'm back in bed by 4:31. :)

Damn coffee.
